Russell Stewart is a third generation operator. He started running machines by himself when he was 8 yrs. old. I know that sounds
exaggerated, but he was truly that young. Russell's father, Sammie, was one of Branson's original excavating contractors in the 70's.
Sammie was the largest contractor in Branson until personal problems caused him to downsize.
Russell and his brother, Steve, would
sit on machines all day long, every day of the summer from the age of 12. While other kids were swimming and riding bikes, they were
working for their father. Sammie eventually sold out before the boys were old enough to take over.
Russell worked for some small companies
around the area and built up his reputation. Land owners would call and request him. On and off he would work for the union. Traveling
away from the area, working on road jobs. He thought there had to be a better way.
The good Lord willing, Russell Stewart Excavating,
LLC was formed when Russell purchased a 963B loader from one of the neighbors. He worked like most business owners, from daylight
to dark 6-7 days a week. He did custom work for the local farmers and home owners. Soon after starting the business, he began subcontracting
for some of the local housing contractors.
Russell, Kathy(his wife), and their two children did it all. They couldn't afford to pay
for bookkeepers, mechanics, or truck drivers, so everybody pitched in and helped wherever they could. Eventually they had so much
work that they needed another operator and machine. That's when Russell's brother, Steve, started working for them.
The companies
grown a lot since then, but they still try to offer the same personal service they started out with. If you get a chance to drive
out on one of their jobs, you'll probably still see Russell running a machine.
